On top of the world….
….that is what it feels like standing at 5,994′ elevation with views from Mt. Hood to Mt. Shasta, in other words, on the top of Bohemia Mountain. You have to work a little to get there, but it is totally worth it.
I enjoy the drive up Bohemia Mountain, and every other year or so, we set aside a day and head up there. Luckily, there are several hiking options available, either on along the way or on the top. Two years ago we hiked up to Fairview Peak and explored what is left of Bohemia City. This year we tried out the Bohemia Mountain Trail.
The Bohemia Mountain Trail (#1440) is narrow and steep, with much of it is on loose, fist-sized rock. The trail is rated “most difficult” by the Umpqua National Forest, with trail grade averages around 15-20%. On our trip, we took our time to enjoy the views, look for birds, and catch our breaths. The good news is that it is only 3/4 of a mile long and the views are spectacular. In fact, the views were so nice that I am looking forward to doing this trail again, hopefully early in the summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.
