Morning Beach Walk: Florence

Morning comes to the beach in Florence.

I love being on the beach and near the ocean. Since Cottage Grove is so close, trips to the coast are usually day trips, which are fun. Last weekend, however, I got a treat; I had the chance to spend the night in Florence with my sister and niece. Luckily, my sister was as interested in getting a hotel right on the beach as I was.

One of the great things about staying right on the beach is that you can head out there whenever the weather breaks, which in the winter and spring doesn’t always last that long. Sunday morning we were fortunate to have a beautiful break in the weather, so I headed out for a rare morning beach walk. Not only was it beautiful out, but I had the beach mostly to myself.

Treasures found on the beach are always fun, and on this walk I was delighted to find a whole sand dollar. Then, slowly I discovered that there were many whole sand dollars – I counted at least a dozen, and at some point, quit looking for them so earnestly. Later I told a local about the cache of shells and he said he often found whole shells in that area (just to the north of the north jetty).

Despite the blue skies, a small rain storm did move through. The bonus? A beautiful rainbow over the ocean.

Logistics: We stayed at Driftwood Shores in Florence. As far as I know, it is the only motel in that area that is right on the beach. I was surprised at how well the price there compared to other hotels in town.

Wow, this makes me want to head out for the beach! I haven’t been to the coast in a long time. I may have to make a trip soon! Thanks!

  2. Wow, another place I need to visit. Beautiful photos.

  3. Wow! I’ve never seen so many whole sand dollars on the beach. I’ve found a few over the years while beach walking but never a dozen in one place. Love those days on the Oregon coast when you get some “dry time” to walk the beach, some rainbows, and a little rain (or a big storm at night). Great photo of the sand dollars with the rainbow!

    • I’ve never found so many at once either — it must have had something to do with the tides and the fact that I was out there before most of the other people. Some were getting covered in sand and were probably going to be stepped on soon; others were coming in and out on the water.
